KPRC Investigates Whether Harris County Taxpayers Are Funding Commissioner’s Campaign Vehicle

Harris County commissioner Rodney Ellis hasn’t launched a re-election campaign, yet is reportedly using campaign contributions from donors to fly business class internationally, according to KPRC 2 Investigates.

Texas’ election code states that politicians can’t fund personal expenses with campaign contributions, but it appears that’s exactly what Rodney is doing, says Rice University political science professor Mark Jones.

Ellis flew to Spain for an oil and gas conference and to learn about bikes. He spent more than $10,000 from campaign funds to finance it, though his campaign hasn’t begun.

Reporters also identified campaign expenses charged at Amazon, Best Buy and Whole Foods, although he has no campaign office.

His Escalade he says is 50% paid for by his campaign, 25% from his car allowance and 25% from his pocket, which means Harris County taxpayers are paying for a portion of the lease.
